AI Overviews (AIO) are the AI-generated summary boxes Google places at the very top of many search results. Drawing on multiple web pages, they answer the query directly in a few sentences and link to the sources they drew from, sitting above the traditional blue links.
When Google decides a query benefits from a synthesized answer, its models pull passages from several ranking pages, stitch them into a short summary, and attach source links. The pages chosen usually already rank well and state the relevant fact clearly. Not every search triggers one — informational and how-to queries see them far more than transactional or navigational searches do.
Being cited depends on giving the model a clean, quotable answer. A home-services client of ours added a two-sentence direct answer — "A standard furnace tune-up takes 60 to 90 minutes" — near the top of a service page, backed by the detailed explanation below it. Within weeks the page showed up as a cited source in the Overview for several related queries. The trade-off is real: Overviews can cut clicks on informational terms, so being the cited brand often matters more than ranking third under a box few people scroll past.
This work sits under answer engine optimization. AI Overviews are close cousins of classic featured snippets and appear alongside Google's AI Mode.
