People Also Ask (PAA)

People Also Ask (PAA) is a Google search feature that shows an expanding list of related questions between or beneath the organic results. Each question unfolds to reveal a concise answer drawn from a ranking page, along with a link to the source, and selecting one usually generates fresh follow-up questions.

How the PAA box behaves

Unlike a static answer box, the PAA block is dynamic and nearly infinite. Google seeds it with three or four questions, then appends new ones each time a user expands an entry, mapping the branching curiosity around a topic. The questions and their order also shift by search, location, and device, so two people querying "why won't my site rank" can see different sets. Answers are extracted much like a featured snippet — a clean paragraph or list lifted from a page Google judges to answer that question — and because users often get what they need in place, PAA is closely tied to zero-click searches.

Earning a place in the box

Example: a Toronto dental clinic added a short FAQ to its implants page answering "How long do dental implants last?" in a single 45-word paragraph, followed by "Are dental implants painful?" Within six weeks both questions surfaced in PAA boxes across dozens of related searches, and the page's assisted clicks climbed even though the headline query still moved slowly.

  • Answer one clear question per heading, then respond in 40-60 words directly beneath it.
  • Harvest real phrasing from the live PAA box instead of guessing at wording.
  • Use question-shaped H2s and H3s so a crawler can pair query with answer.
  • Keep answers self-contained, so they make sense when lifted out of context.

FAQ

Is a PAA answer the same as a featured snippet?

They are pulled with similar logic, but a featured snippet sits at position zero for the main query, while PAA answers respond to adjacent questions. A single page can hold both at once.

Does ranking in PAA drive traffic?

Sometimes. Users who need more than the short answer click through, but many read and move on, so treat PAA as a visibility and authority signal and a payoff of solid on-page SEO rather than a guaranteed traffic source.
