Search Engine Optimization (SEO)

Search engine optimization (SEO) is the ongoing practice of improving a website so it earns higher visibility in the unpaid results of search and answer engines. It spans technical health, content quality, and off-site authority, all aimed at matching what real searchers want.

The three pillars

  • Technical SEO — a crawlable, fast, secure, mobile-friendly site that engines can index without friction
  • On-page SEO — content and structure that match search intent (see on-page optimization)
  • Off-page SEO — external signals like backlinks and mentions that build authority (see off-page optimization)

SEO in 2026

The goal has widened from "rank in the blue links" to "be the source an answer engine cites." That means demonstrating E-E-A-T (experience, expertise, authoritativeness, trust), structuring content so AI systems can extract and quote it, and earning a place inside AI Overviews and chatbot answers. A concrete win still looks familiar, though: a service page stuck on page three at position 24 is rebuilt around clearer intent, given supporting internal links, and earns a few quality citations — three months later it sits at position 4 and its clicks jump roughly seven-fold. That measurable movement is what an SEO audit and a focused program are built to produce.
