Search Generative Experience (SGE) was Google's experimental AI search feature, launched inside Search Labs in 2023, that placed an AI-written summary above the traditional list of blue links. It served as the proving ground for the generative answers that later became AI Overviews and, eventually, AI Mode.
SGE began as an opt-in Labs experiment: ask a question and Google generated a paragraph-style answer stitched together from several sources, shown with links you could expand. After more than a year of testing, Google graduated the feature into AI Overviews, which rolled out to general search in 2024. In 2025 it went further with AI Mode, a fully conversational search experience. By 2026, "SGE" is a historical label — the live products are AI Overviews and AI Mode — but it's the origin story every SEO should know.
The habits SGE forced on the industry didn't disappear. Generative answers pull from multiple pages, cite only a handful, and often satisfy the searcher without a click. Winning one of those citations means writing clear, well-structured, genuinely authoritative content — the core of generative engine optimization. A mattress retailer that published a plainly formatted "how to choose firmness" guide, with specific headings and real detail, kept getting cited in AI answers where thin, salesy pages were skipped entirely.
